  Favourite Frontier: Perfecting the detailed sequential logic for the definitive evaluation of complex fractured carbonates or stacked shaly sand reservoirs.  The desired process efficiently integrates all that field's specific Core, SCAL, Pressure, LWD, DST, NMR, Sonic, Image and other high-tech log data to create optimal geo-model inputs for lithology, facies, porosity, saturation, effective kg, ko, kw, well test kh, netpay and net, using PetroDB defaults where absent.  This process is trapped in a Geolog or Interactive Petrophysics command file, The Vault, which can be calibrated for each field or facies and re-run on any field.   

Why?  Intellectually rewarding and sorely needed by all companies, big and small.  Some large companies do have good basic processes, however these are inflexible and unable to adapt to the power and diversity of integrated modern data sets.  This work continues my 1989 'Integrated Petrophysics..' PhD and is covered largely by Petrophysics Pty Ltd training courses

  Favourite Paper:  Dick Woodhouse's "Accurate Reservoir Saturations from Oil-Mud Cores: Questions & Answers from Prudhoe Bay & Beyond"  The Log Analyst May-June 1998. 

Why?  At last a calibration reference for the log-analyst's eternal headache!

 Favourite Issue: The old chestnut  "The confusion regarding total vs. effective porosity is due primarily to the longstanding inconsistency between core companies use of the term "effective porosity" to mean "Interconnected pores", vs. mainstream petrophysicists (Archie, W&S, Shell, NMR literature) use of "effective porosity" to mean (Total porosity - Clay bound water).  It does not matter what the porosity is called - the important issue is whether logs are calibrated to a fundamental reservoir property which is directly measured and accurate." 

Why? Sit back and enjoy the fun at meetings when someone mentions "effective" porosity.  iprc_91.pdf

 Core Analysts: Please refer to oven dried helium porosity as "interconnected porosity" or simply what it is, "oven dried helium porosity"  Eschew the loaded and misleading "effective porosity" which means something quite different to your users.
